Kindness and Ingenuity during Covid-19

I’d like to start off by giving a resounding thank you to all our essential workers. They have shown resilience and strength in times where we need them most.

During these unprecedented times, I think it is of the utmost importance to highlight and showcase positive stories. I would like to focus on the various acts of kindness and ingenuity I have seen from businesses and individuals alike.

Essential businesses were able to stay open as front-line workers held steady even while waiting for safety measures to be implemented. Healthcare professionals like nurses have been available around the clock, working tireless hours. Most of them temporarily bidding farewell to their families, as they stay away from loved ones to ensure their safety from the pandemic. Grocery employees and other essential workers have dealt with increased risks to their health, chaotic crowds, and uncertainty for their own safety. For keeping us safe, we thank you.

When the Covid-19 pandemic was declared in Canada, many thoughts undoubtedly crossed our minds. What does this mean for us? How will my work be impacted? Will my business need to close? We were thrust into a world of uncertainty and fear while watching the impacts of Covid-19 unfold, first in other countries and then right at home. When schools, daycares, and businesses started closing, we were thrown into a survival mentality. Our old routines have been changed, and we needed to quickly adapt to new ones. During these trying times, something amazing happened; our focus started to shift to supporting one another and increasing our awareness on supporting small businesses.

Individuals have demonstrated ingenuity, flexibility, and perseverance. From creating fabric masks and ear savers (made from crochet and 3D printers), to creating various YouTube tutorials, everyone is doing their part to help anyone who is struggling. Many people have offered to go on grocery and prescription runs for seniors and those at risk. Others have offered their skills through virtual means such as tutoring services, music lessons, and ideas to keep children busy while in isolation. Communities began compiling a list of local businesses to support once they were operational again. In a bid to keep people at home and help flatten the curve, museums and theatre productions started offering virtual tours and shows. Local musicians created the concept of curbside concerts for audiences, while adhering to the appropriate physical distancing measures in place. The feeling of community and strength in each other greatly increased.

For several businesses, ingenuity was crucial for operations to continue. Most breweries and distilleries have paused their production of beer and spirits to focus on making hand sanitizer to combat shortages and join the fight against Covid-19. Other businesses, like Men in Kilts have offered to deliver groceries to seniors and those who are at risk. In lieu of sports, Bauer began manufacturing face shields as personal protective equipment (i.e. PPE) for essential workers. Schools have embraced online learning in virtual classrooms, and many employees are able to work remote.

The Covid-19 pandemic has forever changed the landscape of economies, businesses, travel, routines, and families. It has also created opportunities to transform what was comfortable and adapt to an evolving life.
